a house in luanda

patio and pavilion

luanda, 2010

The concept design consists of a composition of interior space, exterior space, and spaces in between. The result is a house made up of three one-level pavilions which are shifted longitudinally and transversally in order to create 3 patios. The three pavilions are connected by an external gallery that becomes the main axis of the house.
THE SPIRIT OF AN AFRICAN HOUSE
The project aims to shape an essential architecture that reflects the basic human needs. The main functions are carried out in the external spaces, which become a natural extension of the internal spaces.
COLOURS IDENTITY
The project plans the use of warm colours as connotative elements of the African identity. The colours are disposed on the masonry elements of the external spaces.
LOW COST HOUSE
In order to maintain the cost of the building within the 25.000,00 € the project plans the use of systems, practices and materials which are commonly found in local architecture. The layout of the houses makes a reduction of the quantity of the walls, indeed they are shared between two houses.
SUSTAINABILITY
The project is based on the possibility to use the system of self-construction by the future residents; for this reason it has been designed a one-floor house made in bearing masonry. The design plans a vegetable garden inside the plot (lotto) . The materials used are readily available on the territory.
